FROM OUR PRESIDENT
32nd President of D.A.W.L.
I am truly honored to hold the position of 32nd President of the DuPage Association of Women Lawyers. D.A.W.L. was formed in 1980 when the Honorable Helen C. Kinney, DuPage County’s first female Assistant State's Attorney and first female Judge, called the small number of women then practicing law in the county into her courtroom for a gathering. The Association formally incorporated in the year 1982 and has grown into an organization of women and men, lawyers and non-lawyers, who reside and work throughout Northern Illinois. The Association is large enough to have an active voice in the community, yet small enough to ensure the close connection between its members. Our experience ranges from young lawyers, recent career changers, to pioneering practitioners and judges with decades of experience. It is the opportunity to share this breadth and depth of wisdom, from the woman lawyer’s point of view, that makes D.A.W.L. a unique legal association.
Over the last thirty years, the members of D.A.W.L. have made significant contributions which have shaped the legal community of DuPage County. The most significant of which was the founding of Safe Harbor, the children’s waiting room at the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton, Illinois and the creation of its not-for-profit operator, the Child Friendly Courts Foundation. Our partnership with the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana and the institution of the Legal Track program has allowed us to show the young women of today that they can be successful in many parts of the legal profession and we look forward to introducing the legal profession to these young ladies for years to come.
Membership in D.A.W.L. comes with many benefits, one of the most important being the comradery and support of your fellow members. D.A.W.L. members have a wealth of knowledge and experience and are incredibly supportive and willing to share their skills. An exciting addition to our membership benefits is our connection with the Illinois State Mutual Insurance Company. D.A.W.L. Members of the ISBA have complimentary access to their café space, four micro offices in Chicago and conference rooms with AV, video conferencing and teleconferencing available at no charge during the day. We continue to develop and strengthen our relationships with our sister bar associations and plan to partner with the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois for joint events. Fund.
If you are or have been a member of D.A.W.L., I sincerely hope you will renew your membership. If you are considering joining our amazing organization, I hope you will join D.A.W.L. and take advantage of all that we have to offer.
